Are You Being Called By PMR Law Group?* Here’s What You Need to Know

Debt collection is an industry worth billions of dollars. Collection agencies also generate more complaints than any other financial service. While many debt collectors obey consumer protection laws, several engage in illegal practices.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) creates guidelines for both third-party collection agencies and indebted consumers. If you are dealing with a collection agency that uses these types of ruses to get you to pay, you have grounds to sue them.

  • Repeated phone calls intended to annoy you
  • Using racist or sexist language
  • Saying they have court papers to serve on you when they don’t
  • Calling your family and friends
  • Claiming to be members of law enforcement
  • Asking you why you don’t pay your bills

Alleged Violations against PMR Law Group*

According to information on the PACER website, in or around early 2010, PMR Law Group started calling a California consumer to collect a debt. He complained that the agency called constantly and did not identify itself as a debt collector. Collectors also allegedly threatened to call his employer and file civil and criminal charges against him.

Feeling harassed by PMR Law Group, the consumer took action by suing the company for:

  • Using harassing means to collect a debt
  • Misrepresenting the legal status of the debt
  • Failing to identify itself in all communications
  • Threatening legal action it could not take
  • Using false, deceptive, and misleading means to collect a debt.

The matter was later dismissed.
