If financial challenges cause you to fall behind on your debt payments, these accounts may eventually be assigned to a collection agency.
Many debt collectors use various tactics to make you pay in hopes that you will never realize that your consumer rights can protect you from wrongful treatment.
Your Rights Under the FDCPA
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) makes it illegal for debt collectors to abuse you into paying a debt.
The collection tactics shown below can cause an agency to lose its license, but many take on the risk anyway.
- Maliciously reporting false information to the credit bureaus
- Telling your friends and family that you owe money
- Using constant phone calls to annoy or harass you
- Using profane and obscene language
- Pretending to be attorneys or police officers
- Calling you at work when your workplace doesn’t let you take such calls
