Are You Being Called By Global International, Inc.?

Debt collectors can be ruthless: they curse at you, make threats, and harass you by phone. Such conduct, however, is illegal. If you have been subjected to an overly-aggressive debt collector, the law protects your rights and may even entitle you to compensation.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, or FDCPA, is a law that prevents a third-party debt collector from bullying or deceiving consumers to collect a debt. If a collection agency violates the FDCPA by using tactics like those below, you can sue.

  • Claiming that you are going to jail if you don’t pay
  • Demanding that you pay a debt discharged in bankruptcy
  • Calling your friends, family, and co-workers
  • Filing a court action in an area where you don’t live
  • Chasing you for an out-of-statute debt
  • Ignoring a cease communication notice

Alleged Violations against Global International, Inc.*

According to information on the PACER website, in or around October 2009, Global International, Inc. began calling a California consumer to collect a debt. She alleged that collectors called her at work several times a day, left messages that her co-workers could hear, and called her disrespectful for not paying her bills. Her attorney faxed a cease communication notice but the agency allegedly continued to call.

Feeling harassed by Global International, Inc., the consumer obtained counsel and sued the agency for:

  • Discussing her debt with third parties
  • Contacting her instead of her attorney
  • Ignoring a cease communication notice

The matter was later settled.
