Are you being called By Chad Steur Law, LLC?* Here’s what you need to know.

As a profession, debt collectors are arguably one of the least-liked groups. They chase you for money you don’t have and yell at you and / or embarrass you when you don’t pay what they are demanding. If you’re dealing with an especially vindictive debt collector, the good news is that you have rights that these companies can’t legally ignore no matter how much you owe.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

In 1977 Congress passed the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, or FDCPA, to protect indebted consumers from abusive debt collection practices. This federal law makes it illegal to use deceptive and harassing tactics like those below.

  • Using profane and abusive language
  • Discussing the debt with anyone except the you, your attorney, spouse, or co-signer
  • Calling you several times per day using an autodialer
  • Calling you at work when they know that your employer prohibits such calls
  • Calling you before 8:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m. in your time zone
  • Demanding an amount that is not supported by law or the original debt agreement
