The Federal Reserve once estimated that U.S. consumers cumulatively carry nearly $12 trillion in debt. For one in 10 of these people, wage garnishment and debt collector harassment is a regular ordeal.

If a collection agency is threatening to take your wages and won’t stop calling and sending letters, hiring a consumer attorney can stop the harassment.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

While debt collectors may contact you regarding your debt, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) prohibits them from doing so at a harassing rate or trying to intimidate you. Companies that use methods like the following are breaking the law.

  • Contacting you at work while aware that your employer does not permit such callst
  • Intentionally reporting false information to the credit bureaust
  • Calling your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about the debtt
