Is GLA Collection Company Inc. Calling You?*

Is GLA Collection Company Inc. calling you?* Here’s What You Need to Know

Are you behind on your regular monthly financial obligations? If so, you may eventually be contacted by a third-party debt collector acting on behalf of your creditors. If that happens and the collector is abusive, there is something important you should know: there is a federal law in place to protect you from unethical debt collection practices.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, or FDCPA, protects consumers who owe money from being abused by overzealous debt collectors. The FDCPA makes it illegal for a collection agency to use tactics like those below when attempting to collect a debt.

Alleged Violations against GLA Collection Company Inc.

According to PACER, on March 31, 2014, GLA Collection Company Inc. sent an Indiana resident a collection letter stating that she owed a balance of $738.55 on a debt it was trying to collect. The letter added that GLA was attempting to collect the debt on behalf of “Your Accounts”.

The letter did not itemize the accounts to show the identity of the creditors, or the amounts of the various accounts, upon whose behalf GLA Collection Company Inc. was collecting. The plaintiff was perturbed because she had made a payment on one of her accounts, as evidenced by a statement in the letter that read “Thank you for your recent payment”, yet the letter did not identify which account said payment was applied. The letter also did not inform her as to the balance of the other accounts.

Frustrated, the plaintiff hired a consumer attorney and sued GLA Collection Company Inc for allegedly violating the FDCPA in the following ways:

  • Attempting to collect a debt without identifying the creditors
  • Using harassing and oppressive means to collect a debt

The matter was later dismissed.
