Are You Being Called By West Coast Adjusters*? Here’s What You Need to Know

Debt collectors are not legally permitted to harass consumers into paying a debt, but it happens so often that the Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of complaints a year. If you find yourself on the receiving end of an aggressive collection agency, it is important to know your rights.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collection agencies may not use unprofessional methods to collect a consumer debt. Tactics like those below can result in fines and even revocation of an agency’s license.

  • Using profane or obscene language
  • Telling you that you can be arrested for not paying your debts
  • Calling you at work if they know or have reason to know what such calls are not allowed
  • Telling your friends and family that you owe money
  • Threatening action they cannot legally take or have no intention of taking
  • Leaving voice messages that do not identify the collector and the purpose of their call
