When you’re in debt, it can affect other areas of your life: your relationships, your ability to do your job, and your mental and physical health. When debt collectors start to harass you over the phone and send rude letters, you might be tempted to declare bankruptcy to stop the harassment. Before you take that step, learn more about your rights as an indebted consumer.

  • Making threats they cannot legally carry out or have no intention of carrying out
  • Demanding outrageous amounts that exceed the amount of the original debt
  • Reporting inaccurate information to the credit bureaus
