Harassment

You have legal rights. We can help.

In 2014 the National Consumer Law Center estimated that complaints about abusive debt collectors had increased by a staggering 900% since 2000.

They attributed this shocking increase to the rise in debt buying and residual financial woes from the 2008 crisis, but whatever a cause, it’s a sign that collection agencies aren’t always letting the law prevent them from getting your money.

The FDCPA and Your Rights

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, or FDCPA, prohibits third-party debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect consumer debts. Examples of such conduct are listed below.

  • Using grotesque or abusive language
  • Not identifying themselves as debt collectors on your voicemail
  • Calling you at work, knowing your employer does not prohibit this
  • Ignoring a formal cease communications request
  • Presenting themselves as attorneys (if they are not) or police officers
